The Oregon State Beavers were down to their final out at the College World Series. But then Cadyn Grenier singled home the tying run and Trevor Larnach crushed a two-run homer to give the Beavers new life with a 5-3 victory against Arkansas in Game 2 of the CWS finals on Wednesday night in Omaha, Nebraska.

Reliever Jake Mulholland then came on to close things out in the bottom of the ninth for the Beavers.

Game 3 will decide it all, with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m. PDT Thursday (TV on ESPN2).

Bottom 9th: It’s up to pitcher Kevin Abel here for OSU, and he’ll face Jax Biggers to begin the Razorbacks’ half of the ninth. Position changes for the Beavers: Michael Gretler goes to first base, Andy Armstrong to third, Joe Casey to center and Zach Clayton to left. The count goes 3-2 to Biggers. And then Biggers sends one back up the middle for a leadoff single.

That brings up Eric Cole for Arkansas. OSU pitching coach Nate Yeskie comes on and calls for left-hander Jake Mulholland out of the bullpen to replace Abel. Mulholland faces Cole first. He strikes out Cole looking for the first out. Casey Martin (1 for 4) is now the Arkansas batter. His comebacker turns into a double play, and the Beavers win Game 2 5-3 to force Game 3 on Thursday. Oregon State 5, Arkansas 3

Top 9th: Zak Taylor is the OSU batter to start the ninth. He’ll be followed by pinch hitter Andy Armstrong, and then Nick Madrigal. Matt Cronin remains the Arkansas pitcher. The count goes full to Taylor. He fouls off a couple of pitches to stay alive. And Taylor walks. Now Armstrong steps up. OSU brings on Zach Clayton to pinch run for Taylor.

Armstrong fouls off his first bunt attempt, but then he lays down a perfect one on the first-base line, and he successfully sacrifices to move Clayton over to second. That brings up Nick Madrigal, and after him, Cadyn Grenier, with a runner in scoring position for the Beavers.

Madrigal fouls one off, then takes ball one. Then he fouls one off to make it 1-2. Now Madrigal takes high for ball two. Then he fouls another one back. Madrigal grounds one down the first-base line for the second out.

Clayton moves over to third. And here comes Grenier, with the Beavers down to their last out and trailing by one run at 3-2. The count is 1-1 to Grenier. He pops up a foul near the seats on the right side beyond first base, but none of the three Razorbacks can make the grab. It’s 1-2 to Grenier now. The next pitch is high for ball two. Then Grenier fouls one back. Then he singles through the left side, and that scores Clayton.

Grenier delivers to tie the game up at 3-3. Now Trevor Larnach is the OSU batter. He gets ahead in the count 2-0. Then Larnach crushes one to right field. It gets over the fence for a two-run homer. The Beavers come up clutch and take a 5-3 lead. Adley Rutschman pops up to second base to end the inning, but what an inning it was for OSU.

The Beavers turn the tide to take the lead, and they’re now on the verge of forcing a Game 3. Oregon State 5, Arkansas 3
